Safeway unleashes hybrid vigour

Safeway Grocery in Apache Junction, Arizona is one of the harshest and hottest places in the United States with summer temperatures often exceeding 115°F (46°C).

By removing a problematic evaporative condenser and replacing it with Muller Industries 3C units, the store will save about USD$5,000 in annual chemical treatments and about one million gallons of water per year.

The installation also saw the removal of about 200 pounds of refrigerant as the Muller 3C units hold less refrigerant. A further benefit is that the units are about half the weight of the evaporative condenser they replaced.

When the temperature is below 75°F the units are designed to operate as air cooled condensers and when the temperature rises the water is turned on, with the efficiency of evaporative cooling.

According to Paul Noreen, Muller Industries North America Vice President for Sales, the Muller 3C ‘Hybrid’ offered the best of both worlds to Safeway.
